Tyler Downs Makes First Olympic Team as David Boudia Misses His Fourth

Tyler Downs brushed away tears of pleasure on Sunday night, his right hand adorned with an Olympic ring from Team USA.

David Boudia was the owner of the ring. U.S. Olympic divers from prior teams often lend their rings to current competitors, who in turn give them back after winning their own medals.

According to 17-year-old Downs, Boudia’s synchro partner Steele Johnson actually gave him the ring on the pool deck “because David was still executing his last dive.”

For Boudia, that was not a good sign. While Downs took first place in the men’s 3-meter springboard event on the final day of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

Diving, Boudia disappointingly failed to make it into the team for the fourth consecutive Olympics.
