Dennis Rodman born on 13 May 1961 is a retired American professional basketball player who has also been active as an actor and a political diplomat having served in a semi-diplomatic situation between the United States and North Korea. He has earned the nickname the Wormowing to his defense and rebounding talent in basketball.

He has played for a number of basketball teams including Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs, and in Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association(NBA).

Early Life

Rodman was born in Trenton, New Jersey in the United States. An astonishing fact about his family is that he is the oldest of 47 children that his father had from different women. His father left his mother and his two sisters when they were young and went to the Philippines and settled there. Because of this, his mother had to work many jobs at a time, often it being 4 different jobs at the same time to support her three children.

Both his sisters were exceptionally well in basketball, while he was still lacking. This took away some of his confidence. He was further rejected to join his high school basketball team because of height restrains. At that time, he measured 5 feet 6 inches which was quite short for someone to play basketball. After he graduated high school, he took up a job as an overnight janitor at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

Following this, he went through a growth spurt which increased his height to a staggering 6 feet 7 inches which led him to decide to try his hand at basketball again. He enrolled in Cooke County College and played basketball there until he flunked and dropped out of the college because of poor academic performance.

Following this, he joined Southeastern Oklahoma State University where he truly flourished. With his talent and dedication, he brought in wins in multiple basketball championships, leading him to win the Most Valuable Player honors.

Career

Rodman’s excellent time playing basketball in college brought a lot of attention to him, especially of the Detroit Pistons. He was drafted in the NBA draft in 1986 in which he was the 3rd pick of the second round by the Detroit Pistons.

His time with the Detroit Pistons came to an end in 1993. He then joined multiple teams like Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, San Antonio Spurs, and the Dallas Mavericks. His basketball career came to an end in 2000 when he finally quit playing in the Chicago Bulls.

Throughout his career he has won many awards for his game. He has won five NBA championships, was awarded the NBA All-star two times, and also NBA Rebounding Champion for seven times. The list does not stop here. He also has the title of NBA Defensive First Team honors for seven times, and the NBA Defensive Player Award two times.

His name has been added to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011.His recent notable contribution to politics is in his role as an American Diplomat to North Korea. He went there for the first time in 2013 and in his subsequent visits has somewhat befriended the leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un, who is otherwise known to be aloof from the rest of the world.

This strategic friendship helped him in arranging a peace summit in 2018 held in Singapore between the then president of the United States Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un.

Personal Life

Dennis Rodman was first married to Annie Bakes with whom he fathers a daughter named Alexis. The couple divorced in 1990. Following this, he married Carmen Electra who filed for divorce just 4 months after the marriage. He then went on to marry Michelle Moyer in 2003. This marriage lasted longer than his previous ones and he has a daughter and a son from this marriage.

His children take forward his legacy and are athletes as well, his son plays basketball in college and his daughter plays soccer. Michelle had filed for divorce in 2004 and the couple had since spent many years trying to solve the problems amicably and stay together. However, this did not solve the issue and the couple eventually got divorced in 2012.
