Originally from Liverpool, Beth Munro (born 23 June 1993) is a British para taekwondo athlete. She was a competitor in the -58 kg K44 category at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.

She brought home the first-ever medal for the United Kingdom in Taekwondo, a silver medal. Munro was born in Litherland, a district of northern Liverpool.

She was born with a deformity in her 1993 arm. To compete in the Paralympics was a lifelong goal of hers, and at first, Netball was the sport that most piqued her interest.

She had planned to move to javelin, but Anthony Hughes of Disability Sport Wales convinced her to take up Taekwondo instead two years before the rescheduled 2020 Summer Paralympics.

The style of martial arts that would be introduced as a medal event at the “2020” Tokyo Paralympics.

The 27-year-old won the K44 under-58 kilogramme weight division at the European qualifier competition in Bulgaria earlier this month, despite having never fought competitively before.

After only appearing in exhibition matches prior to the Spanish Open in Alicante, she went on to win her sole match, a 68-6 victory over Italian Sara Enea.

For GB Taekwondo, Munro noted, “I am not from a martial arts background at all.” Munro has competed in other sports as well, including netball and javelin.

But everything has lined up wonderfully, so I’m just going with the flow and seeing where it takes me.

In 2019, Disability Sports Wales saw Munro at an Anglesey multi-disability sports tournament and recruited her.

The British squad requested that she attend regular training sessions in Cardiff and ultimately invited her for a two-day tryout.

Welsh taekwondo champion Beth Munro would have laughed if you told her six months ago that she would be competing at the Tokyo Paralympics.

Munro, who had originally planned to go to Paris in three years instead of this summer, has had a tumultuous few months.

Although Munro has had a career in netball—including an international for England in advance of the 2019 World Cup.

She has just lately begun participating in handicap sport due to her congenital arm impediment.

Munro won the K44 -58kg gold medal match against Lisa Gjessing of Denmark, 32-14. Gjessing had more experience and hence won all three rounds.
